A group portrait of the Ladies Alexandra, Mary and Theodosia Acheson, granddaughters of Louise, Duchess of Devonshire by her first marriage to the 7th Duke of Manchester.
The painting was almost certainly commissioned by Louise, Duchess of Devonshire, wife of the 8th Duke, probably to hang at Chatsworth, where the three sisters were frequent visitors.
Sargent visited Chatsworth to discuss the commission during the winter of 1901–1902. He is recorded initially sketching for his composition the ladies' poses when they were playing golf. The painting was first exhibited at the Royal Academy of 1902, where it received general acclaim.
