'A Sounding Line' is an installation of numerous porcelain vessels of varying form, size and colour. The installation was commissioned from Edmund de Waal, a leading British ceramic artist, and designed specifically for display in the Chapel Corridor at Chatsworth.
Edmund de Waal drew inspiration for the commission from the large amount of porcelain that has historically been on display in the house; in particular, the two groups of large white and cream lidded jars in the chimney pieces reflect the formal 18th century groups of ceramics in the State Apartment. The vessels are cream and white-glazed, with elements of blues and greys, colours based on the traditional celadon glazes of the Far East.
