Accessing works of art
If you wish to visit to access works of art that are not normally on display, this is strictly by advance appointment only. Please note the following:
Appointments can be made for Mondays to Fridays; no appointments can be made on weekends or UK Bank Holidays.
Two weeks’ notice is usually required for any appointment and we are not always able to accommodate works of art visitors on the day of their choice.
Access is permitted between 10am and 4.30pm, with a one-hour closure for lunch between 1-2pm.
Requests to view works of art should be sent by email or in writing, details below.
For personal visitors wishing to view less moveable works of art situated in the house, please make your request by email or in writing, details below.
Fees for access
Please note that for accessing works of art, there is a charge of £25 for each visit per day, or part-day, payable by cash or by cheque drawn on an English bank. It is payable at the end of a visit and a receipt is issued. The department reserves the right to vary the fee, depending on the staff time involved.
Application for access
In order to access the collections, please complete the application form below, by which you also confirm that you have read and agree to meet our conditions of access. On your first visit, you must provide photographic identification, such as a driving licence or passport, so that your application can be validated.
Please return your completed forms by email or post, details below.
On the day of your visit
We only have small lockers to accommodate personal possessions, so please keep your luggage to a minimum.
When you arrive on the day, please report to the Porters’ Lodge, which is to the left of the main entrance to the house.
You will be issued with a visitor’s badge and you will be met by a member of the Collections department who will escort you to the location where you are to be shown the work of art.
